The Cincinnati Open semi-final lineup was set on Friday, with Brandon Nakashima and Frances Tiafoe ensuring at least one American in Sunday’s final.

Nakashima continued the best run of his career by outlasting Taylor Fritz in a high-quality three-set battle, backing up his run to the Montreal final with another deep Masters 1000 campaign.

Tiafoe joined him in the last four after producing another composed display to defeat Lorenzo Musetti, setting up an all-American semi-final for the first time in Cincinnati since Andy Roddick and Mardy Fish met at this stage in 2010.

Here’s how Friday’s semi finals played out.

Key Match Recap

Brandon Nakashima def. Taylor Fritz 7-6(9), 4-6, 6-3

Brandon Nakashima continued the best spell of his career by toppling Taylor Fritz to reach back-to-back Masters 1000 semi-finals.

Fritz served superbly throughout, dropping just three points behind his first serve in the opener, but Nakashima hung tough, saving a set point before eventually taking the tie-break on his fifth opportunity.

Fritz responded well to level the match and looked to have seized control when he broke early in the deciding set.

However, Nakashima never panicked. He immediately steadied himself, found another gear from the baseline and reeled off the final four games to complete another impressive comeback.

The American’s confidence is sky high right now. It’s fairly common for players to flop in back-to-back Masters 1000s when they had a good first tournament, but not Nakashima, and he’s picked up some decent scalps with Daniil Medvedev earlier in the week and now Fritz.

Frances Tiafoe def. Lorenzo Musetti 7-6(2), 7-5

Frances Tiafoe backed up his victory over Félix Auger-Aliassime by ending Lorenzo Musetti’s run to book a place in the semi-finals.

The opening set was decided by an excellent tie-break from the American, who raced through it 7-2 before looking to have one foot in the last four when he served for the match at 5-4 in the second.

Musetti refused to go quietly, breaking back, but Tiafoe responded immediately, breaking the Italian once more before converting his fourth match point to seal victory.

Tiafoe’s baseline game has looked noticeably sharper this week, and after his injury scare in Montreal, he’s playing some of his best tennis of the summer.
