Carlos Alcaraz will return to action on Tuesday when the first group of quarter-finals matches get underway at the US Open.
Playing in his first tournament since April due to a wrist injury, Alcaraz is rapidly gaining momentum in Flushing Meadows as he bids to become the first man since Roger Federer to defend a US Open title. Standing in his way is Ben Shelton, who believes he is a better player since the last time he played the world No.2.
Elsewhere, Frances Tiafoe will be hoping to continue his record of strong results at his home Grand Slam. The 28-year-old has reached the quarter-finals or better in four of his last five appearances at the US Open, and he has won more matches there than at any other major event. Tiafoe will take on unseeded Alex Michelsen, who has already taken out seeds Brandon Nakashima and Tomás Martín Etcheverry.
As for the women’s draw, Elena Rybakina was in blistering form as she brushed aside Naomi Osaka. Is the title, as well as the No.1 ranking, hers to lose? Meanwhile, Qinwen Zheng continues to defy the odds by coming back from a 0-5 deficit in two consecutive matches with the last of those being against former champion Iga Swiatek.
