The round of 16 concludes on Monday in New York.
Monday’s schedule sees the bottom half of the women’s singles draw take the court, and despite some upsets in the last round, we have some blockbuster fourth round matches. In a battle between two multi-time Major singles champions, Elena Rybakina plays Naomi Osaka. In a rematch from the semifinals of the Paris Olympics, Iga Swiatek takes on Qinwen Zheng. In a matchup between two top young Americans, Coco Gauff faces Iva Jovic. And Roland Garros champ Mirra Andreeva goes up against Anastasia Potapova, who upset Amanda Anisimova on Saturday.
ATP action on Monday is headlined by top-seeded Alexander Zverev, as well as fast-rising American Learner Tien.
Here’s a rundown of the most notable matches on Day 9 (in chronological order, all times local):
Mirra Andreeva (5) vs. Anastasia Potapova (24) – 11:00am on Louis Armstrong Stadium
Andreeva is yet to drop a set, to record her best result in New York to date. However, this is the first time she’s won three consecutive matches since procuring her first Major title in Paris. This is Potapova’s third time in the round of 16 at a Major, though she’s yet to advance farther. Andreeva leads their head-to-head 3-1, and has taken their last three meetings, which includes a 6-1, 6-3 victory a year ago at this same tournament.
Iga Swiatek (8) vs. Qinwen Zheng (Q) – 11:30am on Arthur Ashe Stadium
Two summers ago at the Paris Olympics, Qinwen upset Swiatek, who was the heavy gold medal favorite on the grounds of Roland Garros. However, Swiatek has claimed her other seven matches against Qinwen, and Iga has been on a roll this summer on hard courts, with a record of 13-1. In the last round, Qinwen made an amazing comeback, from down 0-5 in the final set against Madison Keys. But Qinwen must be tired: she had to come through qualifying, and has already played six matches, the last four of which have gone three sets.
Francisco Cerundolo (24) vs. Alexander Blockx (28) – Not Before 1:00pm on Arthur Ashe Stadium
Both of these men upset top 10 seeds in the last round. Cerundolo came from two-sets-to-love down against Taylor Fritz, while Blockx took out Flavio Cobolli. 28-year-old Cerundolo is 0-3 in this round of Majors, and this is only the fourth Major in the career of 21-year-old Blockx, so one of these players is about to achieve a new career milestone. Earlier this season at the Madrid Masters, Blockx defeated Cerundolo in straights.
Naomi Osaka (13) vs. Elena Rybakina (2) – Not Before 2:30pm on Louis Armstrong Stadium
Osaka survived a stern test on Saturday night from Elise Mertens, Naomi’s second three-set victory in a row. Rybakina has not lost a set thus far, though she’s also yet to reach a quarterfinal in New York. Their only prior encounter occurred just a few weeks ago in Toronto, where Rybakina won a dramatic affair 7-5 in the third. Rybakina came back from a set and a break down in that match, and did so despite striking a season-high 72 unforced errors.
Karen Khachanov vs. Learner Tien (14) – Not Before 4:00pm on Louis Armstrong Stadium
Tien is another player who mounted a comeback in the last round, winning the last two sets to prevail in five against Jakub Mensik. The 20-year-old now vies for his second Major quarterfinal, after first reaching that round this past January in Melbourne. Khachanov arrived in New York with a losing record on the year, but the two-time Major semifinalist has played his best tennis in years, including in an upset over third-seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime. This will be their first career meeting.
Arthur Gea (LL) vs. Botic van de Zandschulp – Not Before 4:30pm on Grandstand
Gea was the top seed in qualifying, yet lost to American Nishesh Basavareddy in the final round. But Gea has taken advantage of his lucky loser spot in an open part of the draw, though he must be exhausted, as he’s played 14 out of a possible 15 sets in the main draw. And this is only the third Major in the career of the 21-year-old Frenchman. Van de Zandschulp was a hugely surprising US Open quarterfinalist back in 2021, when he himself was a qualifier. However, he’s yet to equal that result.
Iva Jovic (14) vs. Coco Gauff (4) – Not Before 7:00pm on Arthur Ashe Stadium
Gauff is now on a nine-match win streak, and an 18-set win streak. Jovic endured an emotional and draining contest on Saturday night against good friend Alexandra Eala, in a match that lasted over three hours. 18-year-old Jovic has now reached the second week of three Majors this year. Four months ago on the clay of Rome, Gauff defeated Jovic in three sets.
Alexander Zverev (1) vs. Luciano Darderi (24) – Last on Arthur Ashe Stadium
After playing five sets in each of his first two rounds, Zverev won in straights on Saturday night, and he’s advanced to the semifinals or better at the first three Majors of 2026. Darderi has won five ATP titles within the last few years, but they all came on clay. And the 24-year-old Italian is yet to face a top 100 player during this fortnight. However, he does own a victory over Zverev, which came just a few months ago in Rome, though of course that was on clay.
