Day 3 at the US Open was one of those rain-impacted Slam days where the schedule struggled to catch up with itself.
Alexander Zverev came within a couple of points of going out in the first round before surviving Lorenzo Sonego in a near five-hour battle, while Flavio Cobolli also had to come back from two sets down to avoid an early exit.
Elsewhere, Gael Monfils celebrated his 40th birthday with a vintage four-set win, Taylor Fritz cruised through without too much fuss, and Lorenzo Musetti made a solid start.
The slightly ridiculous part is that we’re now four days into the tournament and there are still Round 1 matches left to be completed or even started.
Jodar–Bu, Choinski–Van de Zandschulp, Marozsan–Zheng and Guerrieri–de Minaur are still to come, while De Jong–Passaro, Bergs–Taberner and Molcan–Bonzi also remain unfinished.
So while the second round is already underway in parts of the draw, the first round still hasn’t completely disappeared.
Here’s a look at the completed Day 3 results and the matches that stood out.

Key Match Recap
Alexander Zverev def. Lorenzo Sonego 6-4, 3-6, 6-7(7), 7-5, 6-4
Alexander Zverev came within a couple of points of a disastrous first-round exit before somehow getting past Lorenzo Sonego in just under five hours.
I knew Sonego would be tricky, but given Sascha had won all six of their previous meetings, I didn’t expect this to be as tight as it was.
However, Sonego played one of his better matches and continually took the net away from the German.
After splitting the opening two sets, Zverev had a chance to take the third-set tiebreak but double-faulted late and suddenly found himself two sets to one down.
The fourth was even messier. Zverev created a ridiculous number of break chances without taking them and was serving at 4-5, 30-30, just two points from defeat before finally finding a way through.
Once he pinched the fourth 7-5, I fancied him to get it done, although he did have to save a break point in game four before he eventually broke in the fifth to close things out at 1:55 a.m. after four hours and 53 minutes.
Flavio Cobolli def. Francisco Comesana 3-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4
Flavio Cobolli also made very hard work of his opening match, coming back from two sets down for the first time in his career to beat Francisco Comesana.
For the first hour, Cobolli was dreadful. He was flat, spraying errors, and looked nothing like the player who reached the Roland Garros final, but we have seen this before, as he’s had some crazy losing streaks over the last couple of years because of this kind of tennis.
Apparently, the solution was a complete clothing change during the bathroom break after the second set.
Cobolli immediately looked sharper, started getting much more out of his forehand and gradually dragged himself level.
Even then, he went a break down at the start of the fifth before recovering again and eventually finding the decisive break at 4-4.
Gael Monfils def. Adolfo Daniel Vallejo 2-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-0
Gael Monfils celebrated his 40th birthday by producing one more vintage US Open performance against Adolfo Daniel Vallejo.
I said in my draw post that Gael usually has at least one decent match in him, but after he dropped the first set 6-2, it wasn’t exactly encouraging.
However, from there Monfils completely transformed the match. He dropped just three games across the final three sets, hit 37 winners and even threw in a few of the jumping forehands and ridiculous defensive points that have made him such a good watch for the last two decades.
He’ll face Learner Tien next, who I think will just be a bit too steady for him.
Taylor Fritz def. Darwin Blanch 6-3, 6-2, 6-4
Taylor Fritz had none of the drama Zverev and Cobolli experienced, making short work of 18-year-old wildcard Darwin Blanch.
Blanch showed flashes of why he’s highly rated (and receives wildcards galore), particularly on serve, but he also gave away far too many cheap points with double faults and errors.
Fritz didn’t need to do anything particularly spectacular. He served extremely well, winning 91% of his first-serve points, and basically waited for the opportunities to arrive.
Lorenzo Musetti def. Arthur Fery 6-3, 6-3, 7-5
Lorenzo Musetti made a solid start with a straight-sets victory over Arthur Fery.
There wasn’t a huge amount of drama here, and I thought Fery might make things more awkward as he played well in Winston-Salem.
Musetti controlled the majority of the baseline exchanges, took the first two sets comfortably and then dealt with a slightly more competitive Fery in the third.
