Thiago Agustin Tirante downed Novak Djokovic 2-6 6-4 6-4 to reach the third round of Cincinnati.
The Argentinian produced a brave performance to knock out the former world number one and reach the third round.
It was a good start from Djokovic who eased through the opening set playing aggressive and consistent tennis.
However, as the match went on Djokovic struggled with the humid conditions which were at 72% humidity.
That saw Agustin Tirante take advantage and respond with some rapid forehands which clocked at 120 MPH.
In the important moments Djokovic missed some close forehands and lacked the correct decisions.
Meanwhile, Agustin Tirante was consistent and proactive as he broke towards the end of both sets to claim the biggest win of his career.
It’s disappointment for Djokovic who had to see the physio and was clearly struggling with the humidity and heat.
The Serb could not capitalize on the absence of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz as he now heads to the US Open.
Meanwhile Agustin Tirante described what the win meant to him as he reflected on what it meant to his family to win this match, “I think this is the best win of my career,” Agustin Tirante said to the ATP website.
“I think I really did a good job inside the court. I managed very well the nerves of playing against a legend like Novak. Now I feel relieved, because it is all so much pressure when you cannot break [serve]. I had so many points to break and I couldn’t, so that was the key. Keep believing in myself with my team and think about it after the match.
“Thinking about my family and my friends that are in Argentina watching me, they are really happy to watch me on TV… They are in Argentina, but they are in my head as well.”
Agustin Tirante will face Martin Landaluce in the third round after the Spaniard knocked out Matteo Arnaldi.
