Much has been said about Alexander Zverev’s poor record against players ranked inside the top 10 of the ATP Tour rankings this season.

Zverev has broken new ground in 2026, by winning his first two Grand Slam titles at Roland Garros and the US Open and subsequently becoming the world No 1 on the ATP Tour.

However, Zverev’s record against the top-ranked players on the ATP Tour is incredibly poor this year, with the star currently holding a 3-9 record against top 10 players.

While six of Zverev’s defeats were against Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, it’s a big worry for the German and part of the reason why fans are dismissing his world No 1 achievement.

The only players ranked inside the top 10 Zverev has beaten in 2026 are Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton, and Alex de Minaur, with the former two coming at Grand Slams.

Eight players ranked below Zverev currently have a better head-to-head record against top 10 players in 2026, including a player ranked outside the top 15 of the ATP Tour rankings.

Players with a better record against the top 10 in 2026 than Alexander Zverev

- Jannik Sinner – 10

- Carlos Alcaraz – 6

- Novak Djokovic – 6

- Arthur Fils – 5

- Frances Tiafoe – 5

- Lorenzo Musetti – 4

- Alex de Minaur – 4

- Brandon Nakashima – 4

- Alexander Zverev – 3

It’s a very worrying statistic for Zverev, with the likes of Brandon Nakashima, Alex de Minaur, Lorenzo Musetti, and Novak Djokovic all above the German.

Several of those players have had their own issues in 2026.

Musetti’s season has been derailed by several injuries and he has still managed to notch up one more top 10 victory than Zverev has managed in 2026.

Djokovic, meanwhile, has won double the amount of matches against top 10 players in 2026 despite the fact he’s only played 31 matches all season.

Sinner has managed to win seven more matches against top 10 players in half a season, while Alcaraz managed double the amount of Zverev despite missing four and a half months of action.

Likewise, Arthur Fils, who started his season in February and missed two of the four Grand Slams, has also beaten more top 10 players than Zverev.

Zverev has undoubtedly taken massive strides in his career in 2026 and he absolutely deserves credit for it, but until he starts to make a dent in his top 10 record, fans will continue to question whether he truly is the best player on the ATP Tour this year.

After his shock defeat at the Paris Masters, Zverev has two more opportunities to increase his record against top 10 players in 2026.

He will play the ATP Finals and the Davis Cup Finals to round off his 2026 season.
