Taylor Fritz overcame Tommy Paul to reach the Lyon final while Flavio Cobolli missed out on a place in the final.

The American boosted his chances of reaching the Nitto ATP Finals after defeating Tommy Paul 6-3 7-5.

It was a good display from Paul in what was a high-quality semi-final as Fritz boosted his chances of making Turin.

After the win Fritz admitted it was a high level match, “We know each other’s games so well. We practise all the time. Since we’ve gone pro, we’ve always gone back and forth. No one’s ever won two matches in a row. He won the last time, so it was my turn,” Fritz told the ATP website.

“I thought it was a super high level. I played so many points as good as I could play and he still beat me. And I think the other way around, too. There weren’t many free points on either side. We made each other work for it a lot.”

It could have been a tense final against Flavio Cobolli but the Italian was dealt a huge blow to his Turin hopes.

The Roland Garros finalist lost to compatriot Lorenzo Musetti in a last set tiebreak with Cobolli having four match points.

Despite Cobolli having control of the match, the Italian lost to Musetti in a three set epic to miss out on the final.

Musetti was relieved to reach the final in his post-match interview, “It’s really tough to play a friend like Flavio. I know how important this match was for him,” Musetti explained.

“But in the same way, because I haven’t played many tournaments, having the chance to reach a final and get back in shape, it means so much. I fought until the end. We both probably deserved to win.”

Musetti leads the head to head 4-3 heading into tomorrow’s final in Lyon.
