The second round of the 2026 Shanghai Masters began Friday, with Hubert Hurkacz producing the tournament’s biggest upset so far by defeating four-time champion Novak Djokovic in straight sets.
World No. 277 Yi Zhou also caused a major surprise, saving three set points to defeat Lorenzo Musetti in three sets, while top seed Alexander Zverev overcame an ankle scare to beat home favourite Yibing Wu.
Elsewhere, Ben Shelton celebrated his 24th birthday with a win over Daniel Altmaier, and Adrian Mannarino knocked out World No. 7 Flavio Cobolli.

Key Match Recap
Hubert Hurkacz Def. Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-3
Hubert Hurkacz continued his unbeaten run in Shanghai with an impressive straight-sets victory over Novak Djokovic, recording his first win against the Serbian in nine attempts.
The 2023 champion, competing in Shanghai for the first time since lifting the trophy three years ago, delivered another excellent serving performance to defeat Djokovic in 87 minutes.
Hurkacz saved two break points in his second service game and was largely in control thereafter, winning 82% of points behind his first serve and matching Djokovic from the baseline.
Djokovic looked short of energy after his title-winning run in Beijing earlier in the week; it was his sixth match in ten days, and he struggled to make much impression on Hurkacz’s serve.
It’s a special night. I’ve been playing Novak for like seven years, so it’s been unsuccessful, but he’s been such a great champion for so many years.
Djokovic admitted afterwards that facing Hurkacz in his opening match was a difficult draw, particularly given the Pole’s serving ability.
If you lose your serve, it is enough to lose the match, once per set, and that is what happened. It is very difficult to return his serve, almost impossible.
It’s a decent win for Hubi, although Djokovic’s quick turnaround from Beijing probably played a part, which his fans weren’t too happy about when they saw the schedule. He was way below the physicality he usually brings, while Hurkacz looked fresher despite his recent adductor problem.
Hurkacz has now won eight consecutive matches in Shanghai and will face home favourite Yi Zhou in the third round.
For Djokovic, the focus switches to the European indoor season. There is no Athens this year, which his family organise, so he plans to play only the Paris Masters before potentially competing at the ATP Finals, where he remains in contention for qualification.
Yi Zhou Def. Lorenzo Musetti 7-6(7), 3-6, 7-6(1)
World No. 277 Yi Zhou produced the biggest win of his career, upsetting 24th seed Lorenzo Musetti in two hours and 28 minutes to reach the third round of a Masters 1000 event for the first time.
The 21-year-old Chinese wild card saved three set points from 3-6 down in the opening tie-break before taking it 9-7, showing plenty of courage by attacking the net behind his second serve.
Musetti responded by taking the second set 6-3, but Zhou held firm in the decider to force another tie-break.
This time there was little doubt about the outcome, with Zhou racing to a 5-0 lead before closing it out 7-1 in front of a delighted home crowd.
Zhou finished with 14 aces and saved four of the five break points he faced.
I don’t believe it and I do believe it. I showed myself that what I’m doing is correct. I want to enjoy the happiness in myself right now.
He’s now won two consecutive matches in deciding-set tie-breaks, having also defeated Mattia Bellucci in the opening round.
Alexander Zverev Def. Yibing Wu 6-4, 7-6(4)
Alexander Zverev began his Shanghai campaign with a straight-sets win over home wild card Yibing Wu, though the German suffered a brief ankle scare late in the match.
Leading 6-4, 5-5 with break point on Wu’s serve, Zverev stumbled while moving wide to hit a backhand and appeared to tweak his left ankle.
After a short pause, he continued without needing a medical timeout and eventually secured victory in the second-set tiebreak after one hour and 36 minutes.
Wu troubled Zverev with his aggressive hitting, particularly in the second set, but the top seed did enough to record his 30th hard-court win of the season.
He hits every ball as hard as he can, so the match doesn’t depend on you too much apart from your serve. I thought I was serving ok, but everything else is in his hands and he was playing well in the second set.
He’ll face Quentin Halys in the third round after the Frenchman defeated Alexander Blockx in three sets.
Ben Shelton Def. Daniel Altmaier 6-3, 7-6(6)
Ben Shelton celebrated his 24th birthday with a straight-sets victory over Daniel Altmaier, recording his 40th tour-level win of the season.
The American, playing his first singles tournament since reaching the US Open final last month, took the opening set 6-3 before edging a tighter second-set tie-break 8-6.
Shelton will next face Arthur Gea, who defeated Ugo Humbert 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. A victory would secure the American’s place at the season-ending ATP Finals.
Adrian Mannarino Def. Flavio Cobolli 6-1, 4-6, 6-3
Adrian Mannarino added another notable upset to his resume on Friday, defeating World No. 7 Flavio Cobolli in three sets.
The Frenchman raced to a 6-1 first set before Cobolli responded with a 6-4 second set.
However, the Italian struggled with consistency, committing 42 unforced errors as Mannarino took the deciding set 6-3.
The Italian remains fifth in the live Race to Turin, but with several rivals still competing in Shanghai, his position could come under pressure in the coming days.
Mannarino has always troubled some of the best players on tour, especially in his twilight years, and he’s a danger on any given day.
