Key Match Recap
Alexander Zverev Def. Alexander Bublik 7-6(6), 4-6, 7-6(1)
Alexander Zverev battled past Alexander Bublik in two hours and 41 minutes to reach the Shanghai quarter-finals for the first time in seven years.
The freshly crowned year-end number one had to dig himself out of trouble in the opening set, saving four set points before eventually taking the tie-break 8-6.
Bublik got his first chance on Zverev’s serve at 5-6 but hit a forehand into the net. He then moved 6-3 ahead in the tie-break, only to squander all three set points with a couple of loose drop shots and a forehand error.
Zverev took advantage, converting his first set point with a volley to steal the opener.
The second set was a different story. Bublik reduced his unforced errors and became only the second player to break Zverev’s serve at this year’s tournament.
The top seed also appeared to be struggling physically, repeatedly holding his right ankle, which had troubled him earlier in the week.
My ankle was acting up, unfortunately. It was kind of understandable because I have been playing a lot of tennis, which is kind of a good sign because I have been playing well.
Bublik took the second set 6-4 and then moved a break ahead in the decider, but Zverev recovered to force another tie-break.
This time, the opening-set drama didn’t repeat. Zverev raced through it 7-1, sealing the victory with an ace.
It’s Zverev’s 40th Masters 1000 quarter-final, and he will now face Alex de Minaur for a place in the semi-finals.
Zverev gets so much stick on social media as some unworthy champion (typically from quad vaxxed low IQ bandwagoners who jump on whatever noble cause the media is pushing), but he’s physically one of the best on tour, which is kind of unbelievable for a guy with type 1 diabetes and he’s getting his rewards.
Arthur Gea Def. Jakub Mensik 7-6(4), 6-4
Arthur Gea continued his run with another impressive victory, defeating 13th seed Jakub Mensik to reach his first Masters 1000 quarter-final.
After knocking out Ben Shelton in the previous round, the 21-year-old Frenchman backed it up with a confident performance against another of the Tour’s biggest servers.
I thought the Czech was a title contender given the players left, but Gea won 80% of points behind his first serve and out-aced Mensik 11 to six.
The first-set tie-break was particularly impressive. Gea fell 3-0 behind but won seven of the next eight points to take it 7-4.
He carried that momentum into the second set and held his nerve when serving for the match at 5-4, saving a break point before completing the victory in one hour and 37 minutes.
I had a little revenge today, because at the US Open I stopped in this round. I wanted to go far this week, and obviously now it’s starting to be good.
Gea is now 4-1 against top-20 opponents, which is decent. I’d hardly heard his name as he was well outside the Top 150, but he is now No. 44 in the live rankings, guaranteeing himself a top-50 debut next week.
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Def. Hubert Hurkacz 1-6, 6-3, 7-6(6)
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina produced another comeback victory to defeat 2023 champion Hubert Hurkacz and reach the Shanghai quarter-finals.
After surviving a match point against Frances Tiafoe in the previous round, the Spaniard once again found himself in a difficult position when Hurkacz raced through the opening set 6-1.
However, Davidovich Fokina gradually found his rhythm against the Pole’s powerful serve, taking the second set 6-3 to force a decider.
In typical Foki style, the decider came down to a final-set tie-break where he eventually edged it 8-6, converting his third match point to end Hurkacz’s nine-match winning streak in Shanghai.
The Spaniard has had a decent year, winning his first ATP title in Mallorca in June before adding a second in Chengdu two weeks ago, where he also defeated Hurkacz in the final.
Alex de Minaur Def. Karen Khachanov 6-3, 6-4
Alex de Minaur continued his strong Asian swing with a straight-sets victory over Karen Khachanov to reach the Shanghai quarter-finals.
The Australian took the first set 6-3 before winning the second 6-4, playing better tennis than he has managed in the last few months.
He’s now through to his 10th Masters 1000 quarter-final and his second of the season, and he hasn’t dropped a set.
De Minaur is currently ninth in the live standings, but with Jannik Sinner ruled out of the ATP Finals by injury, the Australian effectively holds the final qualification spot as it stands.
