Key Match Recap

Daniel Altmaier Def. Holger Rune 1-6, 7-6(5), 6-4

Daniel Altmaier produced the comeback of Day 1, recovering from a one-sided opening set to defeat Holger Rune in two hours and 14 minutes.

Rune, who was playing just his second (third if you count Davis Cup) tour-level event since rupturing his Achilles last October, made an aggressive start and raced through the opening set 6-1.

Altmaier fought back to take the second-set tie-break before making the decisive breakthrough at 4-4 in the third, breaking Rune for the first time.

Serving for victory at 5-4, 30-30, the German produced a superb backhand passing shot to reach match point before converting it.

There were a couple of points where I really had to fight. I’ve been working on that the past few days. My confidence hasn’t been the highest. It paid off in a really special moment today.Altmaier on his win

Altmaier improves to 16-26 for the season and will next face Ben Shelton. Altmaier won their only previous meeting earlier this year on the clay in Hamburg.

It was both a decent win for Altmaier and not really an unexpected loss for Rune given the injury he’s coming back from.

His wins at the Davis Cup gave the impression he was going to hit the ground running, but his loss in Tokyo showed his movement looked far from back, but today he played decently enough.

Matteo Berrettini Def. Aleksandar Kovacevic 6-7(3), 6-1, 6-4

Matteo Berrettini made a winning start in Shanghai, recovering from a set down to defeat Aleksandar Kovacevic.

The Italian fired 23 aces and didn’t face a single break point despite losing the opening set in a tie-break.

Berrettini responded by taking the second 6-1 before completing the comeback in the decider.

I didn’t let myself down and I fought back and I kept playing and that was the reaction I wanted. I am really proud of it.Matteo Berrettini

The 2019 Shanghai semi-finalist will face Brandon Nakashima in the second round.

Tomas Machac Def. Zhizhen Zhang 1-6, 7-6(3), 6-2

Tomas Machac snapped a five-match losing streak with a three-set victory over home favourite Zhizhen Zhang.

The Czech lost the opening set 6-1 before taking the second-set tie-break 7-3 and winning the decider 6-2.

Machac has good memories of Shanghai, reaching the semi-finals in 2024 when he defeated Carlos Alcaraz en route to the last four, but he’s been so in and out with injury that he hasn’t replicated deep runs.

His next opponent is 19th seed Alexander Bublik, who leads their head-to-head 2-0.

Arthur Fery Def. Marin Cilic 7-6(2), 6-1

Arthur Fery recorded his first victory since reaching the Winston-Salem final in August with a straight-sets win over Marin Cilic.

The Briton took the opening-set tie-break 7-2 before dropping just one game in the second to complete the victory on his Shanghai debut.

It’s another strong result in Fery’s impressive season, and I know most people think he will be a flash in the pan, but I think he moves well enough to maintain a decent ranking.

Karen Khachanov awaits in the second round.

Yibing Wu Def. Michael Zheng 6-3, 7-6(6)

Yibing Wu gave the home crowd something to celebrate with a straight-sets victory over lucky loser Michael Zheng.

Wu saved both break points he faced and won 74% of the points behind his second serve.

The Hangzhou native also had his mother watching from the stands after she made the two-hour drive to Shanghai.

The last time she watched me play was at Wimbledon against Djokovic. So she picked the right moment to come, I would say.Yibing Wu

Wu, who won the silver medal at last week’s Asian Games, will next face top seed Alexander Zverev
