Key Match Recap
Arthur Gea Def. Ben Shelton 7-6(5), 7-6(3)
Arthur Gea recorded his biggest career win on Sunday, defeating World No. 4 Ben Shelton in two tie-breaks to reach the fourth round in Shanghai.
The 21-year-old Frenchman, playing in his first Masters 1000 main draw, returned well to neutralise Shelton’s powerful serve.
Gea broke Shelton at 5-4 in the opening set before edging the tie-break 7-5. The second set followed a similar pattern, with Gea recovering from a 3-3 break down before taking the tie-break 7-3 to complete the two-hour-and-seven-minute win.
I expected tiebreaks, but I didn’t expect Gea to come out on top; he won 20 of 28 points at the net, while Shelton managed just 63% of points behind his first serve, well below his usual standards.
Shelton praised his opponent afterwards.
I got outplayed today. The guy played better than me. I thought he handled my serve outstandingly.
Gea is now up to No. 48 in the live rankings, and given how he’s playing, he has no reason not to climb further.
Shelton, meanwhile, admitted he would have preferred more time to prepare for Shanghai after his US Open final appearance, Davis Cup commitments and a shoulder injury that forced him out of Tokyo.
Gea will face Jakub Mensik next after the Czech defeated Francisco Cerundolo 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
Alexander Zverev Def. Quentin Halys 6-4, 6-7(8), 6-3
Alexander Zverev recorded his 60th victory of 2026 with a three-set win over Quentin Halys, though the Frenchman once again made life difficult for the German, as in previous meetings.
Zverev took the opening set 6-4 and looked on course for a straight-sets victory, but he failed to convert two match points in the second-set tie-break before Halys forced a decider.
The top seed regrouped to secure an early third-set break and eventually completed the victory in two hours and 17 minutes.
Despite the close scoreline, Zverev didn’t face a single break point, and although it’s the fourth time the pair have met this season, with Zverev winning all four encounters, none have been particularly straightforward.
Halys pushed him to four sets at Roland Garros and five at the US Open, while their Miami meeting also featured two tie-breaks.
He plays unbelievably aggressive and he serves incredible. I think for his height, he’s probably the best server in men’s tennis right now.
Zverev’s next opponent is Alexander Bublik, who defeated Brandon Nakashima in another three-set encounter.
Alexander Bublik Def. Brandon Nakashima 6-7(7), 6-3, 7-6(5)
Alexander Bublik recovered from a set down to defeat Brandon Nakashima in two hours and 27 minutes, booking a fourth-round meeting with Alexander Zverev.
The Kazakh had chances to take the opening set, holding two set points at 6-4 in the tie-break, but Nakashima fought back to win 9-7.
You typically don’t fancy Bublik if he drops the first set, but he responded by taking the second 6-3 before edging another close tie-break in the decider.
His serve was a key weapon in the latter stages, with Bublik firing 16 aces across the second and third sets.
It’s another good result for Bublik, who has become a much more consistent performer over the past couple of seasons, but he’ll need another strong serving display against Zverev, who didn’t face a break point in his victory over Halys.
Hubert Hurkacz Def. Yi Zhou 6-2, 3-6, 6-3
Hubert Hurkacz ended Yi Zhou’s impressive Shanghai run with a three-set win, extending his tournament winning streak to nine matches.
The 2023 champion took the opening set 6-2, but Zhou, who had already upset Lorenzo Musetti in the previous round, responded by levelling the match with a 6-3 second set.
Hurkacz eventually regained control in the decider, winning it 6-3 to reach the fourth round.
The Pole fired 18 aces, giving Zhou a first-hand look at the serving level required to compete consistently against the world’s best.
I think Hurkacz is a great player. He served unbelievably today. I think we can play a similar style. If I can improve my serve, it’s going to help me so much more.
Zhou leaves Shanghai with plenty of positives, arriving ranked No. 277 and recording his biggest career win against Musetti.
The 21-year-old will return to the Challenger Tour, but his performances this week suggest he could establish himself at a higher level.
Hurkacz, meanwhile, continues his excellent return to form after a difficult start to the season. He lost seven consecutive tour-level matches between January and March before bringing Gilles Cervara into his coaching team, but has since reached the Chengdu final, Beijing semi-finals and now the Shanghai fourth round.
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Def. Frances Tiafoe 7-6(4), 4-6, 7-6(6)
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina came through one of Sunday’s most dramatic matches, saving a match point to defeat seventh seed Frances Tiafoe in three sets.
The Spaniard took the opening-set tiebreak 7-4 before Tiafoe responded by securing the match’s only break of serve in the ninth game of the second set, taking it 6-4.
The deciding set was where things got interesting. Davidovich Fokina faced constant pressure on serve, including 0-40 at 3-3, but played aggressively to escape and stay in contention.
Despite facing seven break points, Davidovich Fokina saved six, while Tiafoe faced just one and saved it; meaning Foki won without breaking Tiafoe’s serve.
The match eventually went to a deciding tie-break, where the Spaniard saved a match point before edging it 8-6 to complete the victory.
It’s not often you see a player win a match after facing seven break points, converting none himself and saving match point along the way, but Davidovich Fokina found a way through when it mattered most.
