Alex Eala has been phenomenal on the WTA Tour in the summer months and it has continued at the Canadian Open.
The Filipina star’s recent victory against Caty McNally in the round of 32 the Canadian Open was her 10th win in her last 11 matches, dating back to her run to the fourth round at Wimbledon.
Eala claimed the first WTA title of her career at the Washington Open, defeating Jessica Pegula, Naomi Osaka, and Elina Svitolina en route to the championship.
She has looked like cracking into the WTA elite with her recent performances, although legendary tennis coach Rick Macci believes she needs to work on one area of her game to reach the very top.

“If Eala gets biomechanical help on the serve fasten seat belt. With the human eye and at 400 frames per second the timing of the leg drive to innate the racquet entry is 100% off,” wrote Macci on X.
“This causes a decrease in acceleration and the right side to open to early and head to drop. This is the main culprit. Another smaller ticket item is since she uses a pinpoint stance when the backfoot comes up it is too much to the outside of the right foot causing an early over rotation of the other side.
“Being a lefty she has an advantage and if this is reconstructed I can see a 115 mph lefty laser and more that will provide a breathtaking Philippine sunset and she will win more sets!”
In another post on social media, Macci also heaped praise on other aspects of Eala’s game.
“The best thing about the Philippine Machine and her game is she can improve a lot. Her movement if you can exploit it will never be the main calling card but she can mask it with her lethal strikes off both wings.
“The serve is still not even in the neighborhood with being close to biomechanically somewhat correct. She was taught to be smooth relaxed loose and free which is great but the racquet enters the back 100% too soon before the legs drive innates anything.
“The serve is a counter intutitive action with the legs and arm and Alex even though it looks somewhat cosmetically ok the entire concept is backwards. If this is 100% an extreme makeover we could see someday a number one takeover.”
Eala next plays Belinda Bencic at the Canadian Open, for a place in the quarter finals of the tournament. She has never played the Swiss star on the WTA Tour, so it will be a first time match-up.
The Filipina star has already claimed 110 ranking points at the event, so she is teasing climbing up a few more places inside the top 20.
