Novak Djokovic is optimistic about his current form heading into the China Open, where he will make his first appearance in over a decade.

The former world No.1 is the most decorated player in the tournament’s history, with six titles to his name, all won between 2009 and 2015. However, Djokovic hasn’t played in Beijing since he won his last title 11 years ago. His decision to return follows a bitterly disappointing North American swing, where he suffered early exits at both the Cincinnati Masters and the US Open.

Last month, the 39-year-old revealed he is dealing with an ongoing health issue that worsens when he plays in hot and humid conditions. However, he hasn’t specifically disclosed what this issue is.

“I’m feeling good so far,” Djokovic said of his current fitness heading into the China Open.

“Obviously it’s completely different when you’re playing an official match compared to the practice sets or practice sessions. But so far so good.

“I was looking forward to coming to China, as I always have. My record speaks for itself on Chinese soil. Knowing that, it also brings a dimension of confidence that I really need.

“Overall it’s been really good so far with the body, the way I’m feeling and playing.”

Djokovic, who is seeded sixth in the draw, is scheduled to play Portugal’s Nuno Borges in his opening match. He could then take on world No.53 Juan Manuel Cerúndolo in the second round, followed by a showdown with top seed Alexander Zverev in the quarter-finals.

Despite his recent results, Djokovic still has high expectations of himself, downplaying the idea that he is any less competitive than he once was.

“I could play exhibitions just to enjoy the crowd,” he said.

“I’m playing a professional tournament because I also want to win. That’s the primary motivation, is always trying to compete and win against the guy across the net on a given day, and try to get as far as you can in a tournament.

“Of course, if you can also compete in a place where you feel well in terms of conditions, in terms of the crowd support, in terms of the atmosphere, then of course it all adds up to an even better performance.

“I always have expectations for myself. I think going through a career that I had, I can’t satisfy myself with opening rounds of a tournament and be happy with that. I’m always aiming for the last stages of any tournament I play in.”

So far this season, Djokovic has played seven Tour-level events, winning 14 out of 21 matches. His best results were reaching the final of the Australian Open and the semi-finals at Wimbledon. He has yet to win a title in 2026, with his last triumph coming at the Athens Open last November.

“At this stage of my career it’s really also about the tournaments where I enjoy playing, where I had success in the past, where I feel like I’m also welcomed by the fans in a positive light, in a positive way.” He said of his schedule.

“This year Beijing was on the priority list. I’m really glad I’m here.”

Djokovic is currently ranked 11th in the world.
