Here’s a look at the key results and standout matches from day five at the National Bank Open.
Day Five National Open 2026 Round of 32 Results
Key Match Recap
Cameron Norrie def. Alex de Minaur 5-7, 7-6(5), 6-1
Cameron Norrie staged a big comeback, recovering from a set and 2-5 down to eliminate third seed Alex de Minaur in a marathon lasting just under three hours.
The Brit looked destined for defeat when De Minaur held a match point at 5-2 in the second set, but the Australian blinked at the worst possible moment, double-faulting to let Norrie off the hook.
De Minaur was then unable to serve out the match at 5-4, again throwing in a costly double fault before Norrie forced a tie-break.
From there, the momentum completely shifted. Norrie grew in confidence, began dictating the baseline exchanges and ran away with the deciding set 6-1, converting eight of his 13 break-point opportunities over the course of the match.
Both guys are known to be the type of player who never gives up, but Norrie did it better than the Aussie last night, who played more like Alex de Boulter, a man who’d just signed half his assets away.
Rafael Jódar def. Lorenzo Musetti 6-4, 6-3
Rafael Jódar continued his rise by defeating Lorenzo Musetti for the second time in the space of a week.
Fresh from beating the Italian in Washington, the 19-year-old again looked the more composed player in the biggest moments.
After breaking at 4-4 in the opening set, Jódar reeled off 11 consecutive points to seize complete control of the match.
Although Musetti managed to break serve twice in the second set, Jódar consistently applied pressure on return, converting six of his 11 break-point chances to seal another statement victory.
With so many seeds already out, the Spaniard is a genuine title contender.
Arthur Rinderknech def. Frances Tiafoe 6-2, 2-0 ret.
Arthur Rinderknech progressed after Frances Tiafoe was forced to retire early in the second set through injury.
The Frenchman was already in full control before the retirement, racing through the opening set with aggressive first-strike tennis and moving ahead 2-0 in the second before Tiafoe decided he could not continue.
Arthur Fils def. Mariano Navone 6-3, 6-2
Arthur Fils continued his campaign with another commanding victory, dismissing Mariano Navone in just over an hour.
The Frenchman barely gave Navone a look on serve, not facing a single break point while winning 91% of points behind his first delivery.
Fils brings explosive athleticism, and he basically put Navone in his place on hard courts.
Other Matches of Note
Jiří Lehečka bagged a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Alexander Blockx, controlling the match from the baseline throughout.
Amid all the headline upsets, the Czech has gone about his business efficiently and now finds himself among the favourites to make a deep run.
Brandon Nakashima fought back from a set down to end qualifier Titouan Droguet’s excellent tournament, recovering for a 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 victory.
Luciano Darderi also came from behind to defeat Shang Juncheng 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, ending the Chinese left-hander’s hopes.
