Leylah Fernandez is into the fourth round in Toronto after an emphatic and impressive win over Mirra Andreeva.

The former US Open champion won her second consecutive match in Canada this week as she cruised past Mirra Andreeva 6-1 6-4.

It was an impressive performance from Fernandez who overcame the Roland Garros champion in straight sets and is now into the last 16.

Next up for Fernandez is another former Grand Slam champion in the form of Naomi Osaka after she thrashed Elise Mertens 6-1 6-2.

Ahead of the contest Osaka spoke about the difficulties of playing someone like Fernandez and the career trajectories that both players have faced, “I think it’s tough because she’s lefty,” Osaka stated to the WTA website about Fernandez’s gamestyle.

“Obviously there aren’t many lefties on tour, so it takes me awhile to get used to that. She has a really good attitude. I’ve never seen her down. She always keeps fighting. I really appreciate that about her.

“That was just like a whole stressful moment for me. I think that was her big break. What I remember about her was that she was really gritty in that moment in time. Last year was the one that I won. It was really tough. But I also felt like it’s like two different moments in time. We both grew as players and as people, so it’s really hard to say.”

Heading into their match the head-to-head is tied at 1-1.

Eala sets Bencic Showdown

Meanwhile Alexandra Eala has set up a first time meeting with Belinda Bencic after Eala edged past Caty McNally 6-3 5-7 6-4.

After the match Eala acknowledged it was a tough contest as she moved into the last 16, “It was so tough. I wanna thank Caty for a great match and for being a great sport,” Eala was quoted by the WTA website as saying in her on-court interview.

“It’s one of those matches that could’ve gone either way. It was down to details and a little bit of luck. It was a great match.”

It’s now a seventh consecutive win for Eala who won Washington D.C. last week and will now face Bencic for the first time in her career.

Bencic defeated Taylor Townsend in a three and a half hour marathon and is hoping for her fourth quarter-final in Canada.
