Joao Fonseca withdrew from the US Open on Monday after failing to recover from an injury that he recently sustained.

In a statement published on social media, the world No.26 confirmed that he has been forced to withdraw from the last Grand Slam of 2026 due to an abdominal injury. Fonseca recently played at the Cincinnati Masters but pulled out of his second match against Christopher O’Connell due to the issue. Earlier this month, he reached the third round of the Canadian Masters before losing to Ben Shelton.

“After undergoing tests and starting treatment for my abdomen, it became clear to me and my team that I need more time to fully recover so I can compete at a high level,” Fonseca wrote on Instagram.

“Unfortunately, this means I won’t be able to play in the US Open. It was not an easy decision to make, as it is a very special tournament for me.

“We’ll keep working hard so I can come back as soon as possible.”

According to ESPN Brazil, Fonseca returned to Rio de Janeiro shortly after his Cincinnati run ended to treat the pain in the left side of his abdomen. The exact details of the injury issue has not been made public, and it is unclear how long he might be sidelined from action for.

Fonseca made his US Open debut last year, where he reached the second round before losing to 21st seed Tomas Machac. He also won the boys’ title at the tournament in 2023. Making him only the third player from his country to do so after Tiago Fernandes and Thiago Seyboth Wild.

The 19-year-old is currently 19-13 on the Tour this season and has made it to the quarter-finals of three events – the Monte Carlo Masters, BMW Open and French Open.

Fonseca is the third top-30 player to pull out of the US Open men’s draw, which will get underway on Sunday. The most high-profile absence is former champion Jannik Sinner, who is sidelined with a right knee injury. Meanwhile, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina isn’t playing due to a back problem.
