Joao Fonseca has confirmed he will not play any tournaments in Asia this season during what has been a ‘challenging’ year for the Brazilian.

The 20-year-old missed the US Open due to an abdominal injury but recently returned to action last weekend in the Davis Cup. In the team competition, Fonseca defeated Dominic Stricker in three sets as Brazil beat Switzerland 3-1 in the World Group I tie.

Despite his comeback, the world No.28 and his team have decided to extend his break from the Tour. It is the second year in a row that he has missed the Asian swing. Last season, he opted not to travel to the region because of a sinus infection and instead prepared for the European indoor events.

“2026 has been a very challenging year for me,” Fonseca wrote in an Instagram post. “On top of everything the profession demands, a series of injuries ended up taking me out of important tournaments and keeping me from playing the way I would like to.

“I know that’s just part of an athlete’s life, but even so, it’s still frustrating. I made a huge effort to return and represent Brazil in the Davis Cup, but I still need more time.

“I talked a lot with my team, and we came to the conclusion that the best decision right now is to listen to my body, give my mind and body a break, and skip the Asian swing.”

Fonseca currently has a 20-13 win-loss record in 2026. He has reached the quarter-finals of three events since January, which were all on clay. These were the Munich Open, Monte Carlo Masters and French Open. More recently, he reached the third round at Wimbledon and the fourth round of the Canadian Open.

Next month, he will bid to defend his title at the Swiss Indoors, an ATP 500 event.
