Jannik Sinner has become the latest player to be troubled by injury heading into the US Open after he withdrew from a key warm-up event on Sunday.
The world No.1 will not be playing at the Cincinnati Masters after pulling out of the tournament due to a right knee problem. Sinner’s decision followed recent speculation about his current fitness after he was seen attending a medical check-up on his knee in Milan. According to newspaper Corriere della Sera, he is suffering from discomfort in the area and is currently in Turin undergoing rehab at JMedical, which is a healthcare and sports medicine center he has used before.
“After consulting with my doctors and my team, I have to announce that I need to withdraw from the Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati,” Sinner said in a statement.
“My right knee has been bothering me and even though we have been working hard with my medical team, I have to accept that I’m not ready to compete yet.
“I’m very disappointed not to be able to play in Cincinnati and wish Bob and his whole team a great and successful event. I can’t wait to be back next year and I’m now focusing on getting ready for the US Open.”
Sinner faces a race against time to be fit for the US Open, which starts August 30th. He hasn’t played on the Tour since winning his fifth Grand Slam title at Wimbledon, where he defeated Alexander Zverev in the final. It has not been publicly confirmed when he started to experience pain in his knee.
Since making his US Open debut in 2019, Sinner has never gone into the tournament without playing any Tour-level hardcourt matches in the weeks leading up to it. Something that will happen this year if he plays unless he opts to take a wild card into Winston-Salem, which is unlikely.
The absence is another blow for Cincinnati after Carlos Alcaraz delayed his return from injury and doubts are rising over his chances of being fit for the US Open. Alcaraz has been sidelined from action since April due to a wrist injury.
Sinner has a win-loss record of 44-3 so far in 2026, winning six titles.
