Carlos Alcaraz confirmed he is playing at the US Open with the help of a well-known figure in the football transfer business.
The former world No.1 has been sidelined from the Tour since withdrawing from his second round match at the Barcelona Open in April due to injury. Alcaraz has been troubled by tenosynovitis in his right wrist, a condition where inflammation occurs in the protective sheath surrounding the tendons. He originally planned to begin his comeback at the Cincinnati Open before pulling out.
Confirmation of Alcaraz’s return was made with the help of Fabrizio Romano on Instagram, who specialises in football transfer news and is known for his phrase ‘here we go.’ Romano has almost 50M followers on Instagram and Alcaraz has 8.8M.
“HERE WE GO! Carlos Alcaraz will return to the tour at the US Open after spending four months sidelined with a right wrist injury,” a post done in partnership between the two read.
“Ready to come back.”
No information has been given on why the announcement was made in this way. However, The I reports that Romano recently wrote in a LinkedIn post that he is ‘probably not gonna continue into the transfer market industry as I’m doing right now for longer.’ Around the same time, he has created a Milan-based company called Wegofar Srl that will ‘specialise in marketing and sponsorship activities.’ This could have some relevance to the Alcaraz media post, but as it currently stands, there is no confirmation that it does.
Alcaraz’s return provides plenty of intrigue, with the Spaniard not playing a Tour-level hardcourt match since March 22nd when he lost in the third round of the Miami Masters to Seb Korda. Earlier in the year, he won the Australian Open to complete a career slam before winning another title at an ATP 500 event in Doha, Qatar.
He will be defending 2000 ranking points at the US Open, which he won the second time in his career last year by beating Jannik Sinner in the final. Sinner hasn’t played since Wimbledon and is yet to confirm his attendance in New York this year after recently undergoing tests on his right knee. Should he triumph again, Alcaraz will become the first male to win back-to-back titles at Flushing Meadows since Roger Federer in 2008.
The US Open will start on August 30th.
