Arthur Fils’ time at the Canadian Open came to an end as he was defeated by Rafael Jodar in straight sets.
Fils defeated Zachary Svadja, Mariano Navone, and Cameron Norrie to reach the quarter finals of the Masters event, but he was comprehensively beaten by an inspired Jodar.
Jodar won 7-6, 6-3 in what was truly a glimpse into the future of the ATP Tour.
Following the match, Fils was full of praise for Jodar’s performance and listed him as one of the ‘great generation’ currently popping up on the ATP Tour.
Speaking after his Canadian Open exit, Fils said: “I need to get back to training. Good players like him make you want to play a lot of matches.

“I hope we’ll meet again. In fact, I’m sure we will. We’ll play each other many times in the next 10 years. We’re going to have a great generation with Ben [Shelton], [Jakub] Mensik, Joao [Fonseca], Rafa [Jodar]. And I include myself in that. It’s going to be cool to watch.”
Each of the players named by Fils are worthy of being called a future superstar and they have already put in the performances to prove that.
Shelton and Mensik claimed their first Masters titles during the 2025 season, at the Canadian Open and the Miami Open, respectively, and they both currently sit inside the top 20 of the ATP Tour rankings.
Fonseca has already claimed two ATP titles so far in his career and he knocked Novak Djokovic and Casper Ruud out of Roland Garros earlier this year. He currently sits at world No 27 in the ATP Tour rankings, having enjoyed a career high of world No 24.
Jodar, meanwhile, has been one of the stories of the ATP Tour this season. He won his maiden ATP title in Marrakech earlier this year and he’s already followed it up with another final at the Washington Open.
Fils enjoyed a breakthrough run during the 2025 season, which saw him rise to a career ranking high of world No 14 on the ATP Tour.
The Frenchman’s season was eventually derailed by a back injury, but he’s returned to the ATP Tour in fine form this year.
That includes a title victory at the Barcelona Open earlier this year, as well as another final appearance at the Qatar Open.
Those five names might not be at stage to challenge the very top of the ATP Tour, but it’s a very exciting time to be a tennis fan right now with those players bubbling under the surface.
