The seeds continued to tumble at the Canadian Masters after Alex de Minaur failed to convert a match point before losing in three sets to Cameron Norrie.

De Minaur, who at the time was the highest-ranked player left in the draw, was 7-5, 5-2 up on the Brit before serving for the match in the following game. However, a mighty fightback from Norrie saw him clinch a shock 5-7, 7-6(5), 6-1 victory. It is the second time the world No.37 has beaten a top-10 player this season, with his other victory also coming over de Minaur in Indian Wells.

“I thought I gave myself chances early in the third set, and then I just played some bad points in a row and then got behind quickly, and it all just went very quickly,” said de Minaur, who produced 49 unforced errors.

“Obviously something that needs to be better from my side.”

The Australian entered the third round in Montreal as the only top-four seed remaining in the draw. Both Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev exited earlier in the week, and Felix Auger-Aliassime was a late withdrawal due to a back injury. Currently defending champion Ben Shelton, Jiri Lehecka and Casper Ruud are the only players remaining in the draw who are seeded in the top 10.

“It was a missed opportunity because I was up and I was in a good position. I had match point to finish off the match. But apart from that, I wasn’t paying too much attention to that,” De Minaur commented on the series of high-profile losses.

“It’s tennis. Anything can happen. It’s not the easiest of conditions out here.”

As for Norrie, he moves into the British No.1 spot in the PIF live rankings as a result of his victory. He ranks his win over de Minaur as one of the top three of her career in terms of attitude. Norrie has won one Masters title in Indian Wells in 2021.

“I’m feeling the ball good. I can take so much confidence from this win today, saving match points,” said Norrie.

“Everyone is tough at this stage. I’m not even seeded, so I’m just playing for free.” He added.
