Recently crowned US Open doubles champion Taylor Townsend has been forced to withdraw from her second round match at the Guadalajara Open after surgery.

Townsend, who was set to take on top seed Marta Kostyuk, was initially announced as withdrawing due to illness. However, the American later confirmed on Instagram that she had emergency surgery. No details have been given about the reason why she had to undergo an operation.

“Welp… this s— definitely wasn’t on my bingo card. Through trials and tribulations… still I rise. I’ll update y’all soon,” Townsend wrote in an Instagram story.

Townsend then posted a statement from the tournament which confirmed she had surgery. The setback comes just a week after she won the US Open doubles title alongside Katerina Siniakova. She also reached the fourth round of the singles tournament, defeating two seeded players, before losing to Aryna Sabalenka.

“Hi everybody, on the heels of achieving my first career Grand Slam at the US Open, I was so excited to play in front of you all at Guadalajara,” the statement read.

“Because of emergency surgery I am forced to withdraw from the GDL Open, and it breaks my heart. But I’m looking forward to coming back next year to see all of you, the greatest tennis fans. Viva Mexico!”

It’s unclear how long the 30-year-old will be sidelined or whether the surgery will affect her plans for the rest of the season. Townsend has few points to defend in singles for the rest of the year, but she is the defending doubles champion at the Japan Open. She is defending semi-final points at the Pan Pacific Open and WTA Finals in doubles.

Meanwhile, at the Guadalajara Open, Kostyuk will play eighth seed Liudmila Samsonova in the quarter-finals. Six of the eight seeds have made it through to the quarter-finals of the WTA 500 event, as well as former US Open champion Sloane Stephens and Peyton Sterns.
