Day Eight Shanghai Masters Round of 16 Results
Key Match Recap
Daniil Medvedev Def. Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4, 7-5
Daniil Medvedev continued his strong run in Shanghai with a straight-sets victory over small cat Stefanos Tsitsipas, improving his head-to-head record against the Greek to 11-5.
The Russian took the first set 6-4 before closing out a tighter second 7-5, completing the win in just 84 minutes.
Medvedev was particularly impressive on serve, didn’t face a single break point, and delivered one of his more composed performances.
No theatrics or outbursts as we often get, and he committed just 10 unforced errors compared with the Greek’s 18.
I thought Stef played decent enough too, but his forehand seemed shackled when he really needed to dictate with it.
I love Shanghai as a city. It is one of my favourite stops on Tour, so trying to stay as long as possible. I am playing great.
Medvedev has now reached the Shanghai quarter-finals in four of his past five appearances and is the only former champion remaining in the draw.
He also hasn’t dropped a set this week and is currently eighth in the live Race to Turin, putting him in a strong position to return to the ATP Finals after missing out last year.
He’ll face Tommy Paul next after the American defeated Zizou Bergs 7-6(5), 6-4.
Rafael Jodar Def. Botic van de Zandschulp 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-2
Rafael Jodar maintained his ATP Finals hopes with another comeback victory, defeating Botic van de Zandschulp in two hours and 30 minutes to reach the Shanghai quarter-finals.
The 20-year-old Spaniard has now recovered from a set down in all three matches this week, having previously beaten Thiago Agustin Tirante and Jiri Lehecka in a similar fashion.
Van de Zandschulp started well, saving two break points in the opening set before playing a solid tie-break to take it 7-4.
However, Jodar responded by breaking early in the second set, settling in and gradually taking control.
He levelled the contest at one set apiece before pulling away in the decider, winning it 6-2 to secure his place in the last eight.
I think I was doing the right things, but he played important points in the tie-break better than me. That’s why he won the first set.
Jodar now holds a 41-16 record in his first full year on Tour and sits 11th in the live Race to Turin, just 131 points behind Novak Djokovic in 10th.
He’s making a strong case for ATP Finals qualification, and I think he’d be a decent addition, with the only real question mark being his on-court stuff with the ball kids.
After dropping the first set today, he got frustrated waiting for a towel, yelled something along the lines of “¡Dame la puta toalla, coño!” (roughly “Give me the fucking towel, damn it!”) at a young ball kid, and received an unsportsmanlike conduct warning. A bit unnecessary, but it doesn’t seem to derail his game, as he’s shown plenty of resilience this week.
Casper Ruud awaits in the quarter-finals.
Casper Ruud Def. Felix Auger-Aliassime 5-2 RET
Casper Ruud advanced to the Shanghai quarter-finals after Felix Auger-Aliassime was forced to retire midway through the opening set with a knee injury.
The Norwegian was leading 5-2 when the fourth seed decided he couldn’t continue, bringing an unfortunate end to a match that had promised to be competitive.
From the replays I’ve seen, Auger-Aliassime appeared to hurt himself while moving to reach a passing shot, tweaking his knee.
I think he was ready at the start and it seemed to me that he kind of twisted something over at the net in the third or fourth game.
Ruud had broken serve to lead 3-1 and looked in control when the Canadian retired, so he looked stronger before any injuries, and FAA hasn’t managed to get going after his Wimbledon loss.
Ruud will face Rafael Jodar next.
Tommy Paul Def. Zizou Bergs 7-6(5), 6-4
Tommy Paul ended Zizou Bergs’ Shanghai run with a straight-sets victory to reach the quarter-finals.
The American edged a tight opening set 7-6(5) before taking the second 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals.
Bergs had conquered Carlos Alcaraz on Monday. However, he couldn’t follow that up against Paul, who had already knocked out defending champion Valentin Vacherot in the previous round.
Paul will face Daniil Medvedev next, and the Russian hasn’t dropped a set this week.
