The 2026 National Bank Open in Montreal finally got underway after torrential rain turned the opening day into almost a complete washout, with just a handful of matches completed before play was abandoned, rendering a blog post pointless.

Day two wasn’t much kinder either, as further interruptions forced players on and off court throughout the day before a late-evening push allowed organisers to claw back much of the schedule.

Despite the stop-start conditions, there were some interesting results. Mariano Navone claimed one of the biggest wins of his career by upsetting Matteo Berrettini, Gaël Monfils rolled back the years in front of a supportive crowd, home favourite Gabriel Diallo delighted the Canadian fans, while Alex Michelsen, Marin Čilić and Nuno Borges were among those to book their places in the second round.

Mariano Navone def. Matteo Berrettini 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-3

Mariano Navone produced one of his best hard court wins, overcoming Matteo Berrettini in a high-quality three-set encounter that resumed after the day’s rain delays.

The Argentine controlled much of the opening set before Berrettini responded in the second, edging a tight tie-break to force a decider. But Navone refused to let the momentum swing permanently, immediately regaining control in the third set to complete an impressive upset.

Navone saved 11 of the 12 break points he faced throughout the match, repeatedly frustrating Berrettini despite the Italian creating opportunities in almost every set.

So while it goes down as one of Navone’s best wins, it’s a poor result for the Italian against a guy who has zero hard court pedigree.

Gaël Monfils def. Kamil Majchrzak 6-4, 6-4

I had a feeling Monfils could string together a few wins here, and he mixed athletic defence with trademark improvisation to upset Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak.

Majchrzak has been in good form this season, but Monfils had a great serving day, winning 26 of his 31 first-serve points (84%) while producing several spectacular winners that brought the fans to their feet. He eventually served out the match on his second attempt shortly before midnight.

It marked Monfils’ first ATP Tour-level win since Monte Carlo in April and his 146th Masters 1000 match victory, the most by any player never to win a Masters 1000 title.

Gabriel Diallo def. Kyrian Jacquet 6-7(1), 6-3, 6-2

Home favourite Gabriel Diallo recovered well after a disappointing opening-set tie-break to earn his first-ever main-draw victory at the National Bank Open.

The Montreal native struggled early as Jacquet dominated the first-set breaker, but Diallo never allowed his confidence to dip.

At 6ft 8in, Diallo used his powerful serve to dictate proceedings, never facing a single break point throughout the contest while winning 77% of his first-serve points.

After an injury-hit season that saw him fall outside the Top 100, the victory showed the level that carried him into the world’s top 35 last year, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s the Canadian player who goes furthest here.

Alex Michelsen def. Jan-Lennard Struff 6-1, 3-6, 6-1

Alex Michelsen continued his impressive 2026 campaign with a solid victory over experienced German Jan-Lennard Struff.

The American dominated both the opening and deciding sets, breaking Struff repeatedly with aggressive baseline tennis while limiting the German’s opportunities to dictate with his powerful serve.

Marin Čilić def. Sho Shimabukuro 7-6(2), 6-1

Former US Open champion Marin Čilić showed there is still some good matches left in the tank as he safely negotiated qualifier Sho Shimabukuro.

The Croatian survived a competitive opening set before dominating after the tie-break, dropping just a single game in the second set.

Čilić was particularly impressive under pressure, saving all four break points he faced while using his experience to gradually wear down the Japanese qualifier.

Nuno Borges def. Aleksandar Kovacevic 6-7(7), 6-2, 6-4

Nuno Borges recovered from a frustrating opening-set tie-break loss to continue his excellent record in Canada.

The Portuguese player hit back after narrowly missing out on the first set, dominating the second before completing the comeback with a composed deciding set.

The win ensured Borges reached the third round in Montreal for the third consecutive year while also bringing up his 20th ATP Tour victory of the season for a third successive campaign.

I used to think Borges was a non-entity at ATP level, but he’s more than proved that wrong, consistently winning matches, and he’s a bit of a mainstay around that top 50 mark.

He will next face 26th seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry, whom he’s beaten twice this year already.

Other Notable Results

Cameron Norrie edged Camilo Ugo Carabelli 7-6(5), 6-4 to continue his return to form, while Corentin Moutet was among the day’s most convincing winners, dropping just three games against Márton Fucsovics.

Jaume Munar overcame Rinky Hijikata in straight sets, Miomir Kecmanović survived a deciding-set tie-break against Michael Zheng, and Daniel Altmaier recovered from a set down to defeat Aleksandar Vukic after nearly three hours.

Elsewhere, Vít Kopřiva defeated Canadian wildcard Alexis Galarneau, James Duckworth comfortably beat Christopher O’Connell in the all-Australian clash, Nicolás Mejía fought back to eliminate Martin Landaluce, Yannick Hanfmann defeated Benjamin Bonzi, while Juncheng Shang and Gaël Monfils completed the list of first-round winners advancing to Wednesday’s second-round action.
