Jannik Sinner has confirmed that he will not be playing the US Open this year due to a knee injury.
In a statement posted on social media, the world No 1 said: “Even though I have been working hard with my team and my medical staff, we have now had to make the difficult decision that I will not be able to compete at the US Open this year.
“We have been back on court in Monte Carlo over the last couple of days and have realised that I still need more time to recover from my right knee issue.
“I’m obviously very sad and disappointed, as New York has a special place in my heart. I was very much looking forward to coming back and playing in the electric atmosphere in front of the great fans there.”
Sinner’s withdrawal comes just one day after Carlos Alcaraz confirmed he would be making his tennis return at the Grand Slam, so it’s very disappointing for the tennis world.
Alcaraz and Sinner have not played a Grand Slam together since the Australian Open, which saw the Spaniard lift the title and Sinner lose in the semi finals.
As a result of Sinner’s withdrawal from the US Open, he will lose a significant number of ranking points, as he performed well at the Grand Slam last season.

The Italian lost in the final of the 2025 US Open to Alcaraz, which means he would have been defending 1300 ranking points at the tournament.
That will come off his ATP Tour total, so he will be left on 11,500 ranking points, which still makes him comfortably the world No 1 in the rankings.
However, should Zverev win the US Open this year, where he will be one of the favourites, then he will really start to close the gap on the world No 1.
The German is currently on 7790 ranking points, and he is only defending third round points from last year’s event. He will be the top seed, alongside Alcaraz, who has been missing for the last five months of the season.
The star has already capitalised on Alcaraz’s withdrawals from Roland Garros and Wimbledon, by winning the clay court Grand Slam and reaching the final of the SW19 event for the first time in his career.
As for Sinner, his next likely tournament after his withdrawal from the US Open will be the China Open, which takes begins on September 28th.
The Italian won the ATP 500 event last year by defeating Learner Tien in the final, so he will be defending 500 ranking points at the Beijing event.
