Daniil Medvedev is through at the US Open while Tommy Paul survived a scare on day one of the last Grand Slam of the season.
Daniil Medvedev is into the second round at the US Open after a relatively comfortable straight sets win over Hugo Gaston.
The former champion’s recent form hasn’t been that great but Medvedev produced a professional 6-4 6-2 6-4 win in his opening round match.
After the match Medvedev admitted he was happy with his performance. “The last couple of weeks were not easy but, you know how it is, sometimes you lose matches, sometimes you win,” Medvedev told the ATP website with perspective.
“I’m happy that today I managed to produce a high level of tennis. I felt like I did everything I wanted to do well. I finished the match strong. I started the match strong. I’m really glad the way I played.”
Next up for Medvedev will be either American wildcard Sebastian Gorzny or Raphael Collignon.
In other results 20th seed Tommy Paul survived a big scare as he defeated Coleman Wong 6-7(3) 6-1 6-3 6-3.
The American grinded out a four set win and will now play talented Croatian Dino Prizmic in the second round.
Prizmic outlasted Alexander Shevchenko in five sets in an epic match as he reached the second round.
However, there were defeats for British number one Cameron Norrie as he lost in four sets to Luca Van Assche.
Meanwhile, another Brit in the form of Toby Samuel earned a big win over Tomas Machac in straight sets.
Samuel will now play Machac’s compatriot Jiri Lehecka next after he defeated former US Open quarter-finalist Pablo Carreno Busta in four sets.
