Arthur Fils had very little answers to Taylor Fritz in their round of 16 match at the Paris Masters.

The Frenchman fell to a straight sets defeat to the American to end his campaign as his home Masters tournament and he will not turn his attention towards the ATP Finals.

Fils has already confirmed his place at the Turin tournament, although his status looked in doubt as he appeared to struggle in his match against Fritz.

The Frenchman was asked whether he was injured in his post-match press conference at the Paris Masters and he provided a blunt response.

“Tough first question. No, I’m not injured. He was just better than me. I didn’t feel really comfortable on the court because he made me feel like that. He played, I think, a very good match. Congrats to him.”

Fritz produced a very good performance against Fils and the Frenchman was understandably frustrated that he was given little opportunities to shine in front of his home crowd.

“It was very, very complicated, but after all, it’s indoors, so I felt at one point or another, I could have an opportunity. But overall, it’s not that I played badly,” he said.

“It’s just that he played better. He served better, returned better. In the final analysis, it’s two breaks. Not much to say, really.”

Fils was left rueing crucial errors in the match and he will head to the ATP Finals looking to make several improvements for the year-end event.

Yes, there were a number of points where I was too defensive, but it’s a hard court that is extremely fast. We’re not used to playing that fast anymore.

“I could have returned better the second ball, as you said. I could have used my forehand better. Now it’s a bit early. I have to talk to my team. We haven’t debriefed yet, so I have to talk to them to see what parts there are for improvement.”

Despite his round of 16 exit at the Paris Masters, Fils has enjoyed another good season on the ATP Tour, in which he has proved he has all the tools to become one of the very best players in the world.

The Frenchman claimed his maiden Masters title at the Cincinnati Open and he also won the Barcelona Open.

The only disappointing aspect of Fils’ season came at Grand Slam level. He did not play the Australian Open or Roland Garros and he reached the second round of Wimbledon and was knocked out in the first round of the US Open.
